Q: how do i get a project from iMovie 11 to idvd

I made an iMovie using 10.0.4.  How do I get it to iDVD so I can burn dvds with that movie on them?

What do I do?  Share to File (whatever that is.)?

Thanks,

Hal

You can send your finished movie directly to iDVD and then create a professional-quality DVD featuring your movie.

To send your movie to iDVD:

In iMovie, open a project or select it in the Project Library, and then choose Share > iDVD.

The Share menu appears in a light gray bar across the top of your computer screen.

Your movie is rendered and sent to iDVD.

iDVD opens with your movie in a new iDVD project. You can modify the project just as you would any other iDVD project, by changing the DVD theme, editing the menus, adding more movies, adding photo slideshows, and so on. Or, you can simply burn your movie to a DVD immediately.

Your title says iMovie 11 but in the text you say iMovie 10.0.4.

If you are using 10.0.4 then I believe I have read on here, (I don't have this version) From top of screen select File then Share then File and then select the 480 option.Use this in iDVD

    Hi Halle

There are two kinds of DVD that You can burn on Your Mac.

    - Data-DVDs

    - Video-DVDs to be played on a standard Video DVD-Player

BUT to do the last one one must use a DVD authoring program as iDVD.

This is not free but can be bought as part of iLife'09 or 11 bundle (CD-version only)

I prefer the '09 as You then get all themes and after program up-date is same as in '11.

Try to find a copy at Amazon or e-bay. Apple do not sell any more.

    Good luck.

    Yours Bengt W

I'm sorry.  I wasn't clear.  I made the video with a newer version of iMovie, which does not interface directly with iDVD.

I need to save as a high quality file which I can then import into iDVD.

    Thanks though,

    Hal

I"m not sure what Apple calls 10.0.0 but this newer version does not interface with iDVD.  I also have the old iMovie HD, which does work with iDVD, but regrettably made this particular movie using the new "improved" version of iMovie.   So I have to save it as a high quality .mov file, if that is correct, and then import that into iDVD. I think.

    Thanks anyway,

    Hal

    Share as file

AND AS 480p - higher resolution results in lower quality as down scaling is done badly !

    Thanks Bengt.

I wasn't as clear as I should have been.  I an early 2008 iMac on which I have both an old version of iMovie HD which does interface directly with iDVD, which I also have on the iMac; AND I have the new, "improved" version of iMovie which does not interface with iDVD directly.

What I need to do now, I think,  is Save -- I guess now they call it "Share" -- the movie into a file -- .mov? -- something that is of good quality that will open in iDVD.

    For iMovie 10 select 480p.

Open iDVD, select a theme and drag the exported QT movie file into the open iDVD window being careful to avoid any drop zones.  Do not move the movie file once it's been imported into the iDVD project.  Therefore place it where you plan on keeping it full time.

Follow this workflow to help assure the best quality video DVD:

Once you have the project as you want it save it as a disk image via the File ➙ Save as Disk Image  menu option. This will separate the encoding process from the burn process.

To check the encoding mount the disk image, launch DVD Player and play it.  If it plays OK with DVD Player the encoding is good.

Then burn to disk with Disk Utility or Toast at the slowest speed available (2x-4x) to assure the best burn quality.  Always use top quality media:  Verbatim, Maxell or Taiyo Yuden DVD-R are the most recommended in these forums.
