Iphoto quit working with Canon Rebel T4i

Greetings,

I am running a late 2009 Macbook Pro OS X 10.6.8 with Iphoto 8.1.2. My go to camera is a Canon Rebel T4i and I shoot in Raw almost without exception. File format is .cr2. I have been able to import my Raw photos without issue for several months until today when I received an error message from Iphoto informing me that the photos I wished to transfer were in an incompatible format and could not be imported. I can clearly see the pictures I want to import in iphoto so the program is at least able to generate a preview but it will not import giving me the above mentioned error message. What am I missing and what can be done to correct this short of updating my entire operating system and iphoto? What can I say, I like Snow Leopard.

As a Test:

Hold down the option (or alt) key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Create Library'

Import a few pics into this new, blank library. Is the Problem repeated there?

Post back with the result.

One more test: log into another user account on your Mac and see if you can import into a library there. Can you?

Tried importing photos under a different account. Same error message. Pictures are still not importing. Unrecognized format.

See if you can use Image Capture or a card reader to upload your image files from the memory card to a folder on the Desktop. Once they are safely on the hard drive see if you can open them with Preview. If you can't then the files may be damaged.

Also use the camera to reformat the memory card, take some test shots and try importing again as you usually do.

Have you applied the Digital Camera RAW Compatibility Update 3.14? You might want to download it and try again even if you already have. It brings Rebel T4i compatibility to OS X Lion.

Just tried the update. Received an error message saying it is ONLY for Aperture 3 and Iphoto 9. Apparently my Iphoto version is Iphoto '09 8.1.2 and is not compatible with the update.

Yes, that RAW Support Compatibility Update requires iPhoto '11 or Aperture 3. You will need to upgrade to iPhoto '11, if you want RAW support for your camera. Either buy an iLife '11 installer DVD from Amazon and upgrade to iPhoto '11 this way, or upgrade to Yosemite, if your Mac supports it and buy the iPhoto 9,6 upgrade from the AppStore.

Either buy an iLife '11 installer DVD from Amazon and upgrade to iPhoto '11 this way,

or upgrade to Yosemite, if your Mac supports it and buy the iPhoto 9,6 upgrade from the AppStore.

iPhoto '11 is part of the iLife '11 bundle, and the installer DVDs for iLife '11 have earlier versions of iPhoto '11. iPhoto 9.2.4 will run with MacOS X 10.6.8, see for example: iPhoto 9.2.3
