The "Get OS X Yosemite free" pop up is on my desktop and I can't get rid of it. Does anyone know how to do this? Thanks.

If it's on your desktop & not a widow, then go to System Preferences > desktop & change the desktop background.  I'm not familiar with Apple using intrusive advertising as you've described.  For the very reason that Apple gives away the software for free they have little reason to push the update to that extreme.  if anything, it could be a 3rd party app that is responsible, which would be to get users to go to their website, which is reason enough to avoid the site since only Apple can distribute their software.

Nope. It's definitely from Apple, who are pushing the upgrades to the extreme. Nothing to do with Sys Prefs>Desktop or any third party app.

They have every reason to push Yosemite ... To add impetus to the current sales push, increased sales for having to upgrade some features, more reasons to drop support for lower level OSs, to keep us more in line (the control freak theory ), the list is endless.
