Q: How to connect an airport express to a time capsule via WiFi?

I've got a Time Capsule set up in the garage downstairs where the internet comes into the house. The Wi-Fi comes thru clear on the 2nd floor but it's spotty on the 3rd floor.

Is there a way to set up an airport express on the 2nd floor via WiFi to the Time Capsule to extend the Wi-Fi range upstairs?

Thanks!

If you have a free Ethernet port on your computer, then connect the AEX to your computer via Ethernet and share the connection via Wi-Fi using the Sharing preference panel's Internet Sharing option.

Yes, you can locate an AirPort Express on the second floor to extend the signal and provide stronger coverage up on the 3rd floor. If you do it this way, the Express needs to be located where it can receive a good signal from the Time Capsule.

While the Express can connect using a wireless connection to the Time Capsule, things would be even better if you could connect the AirPort Express to the Time Capsule using a permanent, wired Ethernet cable connection. If you can, you can then locate the Express anywhere that you want, since there is no signal loss through the Ethernet cable.

Unfortunately, there's just one computer in the house and that's a Mac book pro that I want to be able to use with a stronger Wi-Fi signal upstairs but if we ever get another computer for downstairs it sounds like this could be a great option.

    Thanks Kappy

I'm trying to avoid connecting via a wired ethernet cable because of the length of cable needed to get it up to the second floor.

What are the steps to connecting the Airport Express to the Time Capsule taking the WiFi route?

    Thanks Bob

The steps will depend on what operating system you are using on your MacBook Pro. An iPhone or iPad could also be used for the setup as well.

Assuming that you have Lion, Mountain Lion, Mavericks or Yosemite installed as the operating system on your Mac......

Locate the AirPort Express where it can receive a good signal from the Time Capsule

Power up the AirPort Express and let it run a few minutes

On the Mac, open Finder > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility

    Click on Other WiFi Devices

    Click on AirPort Express

The utility will open up and suggest the correct setup. Follow the prompts.

If you have an iPhone or iPad handy, go to the home screen

    Tap Settings

    Tap WiFi

Under the setting of Set Up a New AirPort Base Station...

    Tap AirPort Express

The utility will open up and suggest the correct setup. Follow the prompts.

It's all amazingly simple......once you know how to get started....everything else just drops into place.
