Q: The Support page contradicts itself! How do I upgrade the later version of my iPhoto Library?

TELL ME IF THIS DOES NOT CONTRADICT ITSELF?

iPhoto '11 or later: About the Library Upgrader

You might see this message in iPhoto: "To open your library with this version of iPhoto, it first needs to be prepared." If you do, you can use the iPhoto Library Upgrader tool to prepare your library to work with the current version of iPhoto.

The iPhoto Library Upgrader is a tool that prepares libraries from iPhoto '08 (v7.x) or earlier so that you can upgrade them with the current version of iPhoto. If your library is from iPhoto '09 (v8.x) or later, you don't need to use this tool.

THEN HOW DO I UPGRADE MY LATER VERSION??

iPhoto '11, OS X Yosemite (10.10.1), IPhoto Library

Ok I will - There is No contradiction at all - Notice the CONDITIONAL STATEMENT

You might see this message in iPhoto: "To open your library with this version of iPhoto, it first needs to be prepared." If you do, you can use the iPhoto Library Upgrader tool to prepare your library to work with the current version of iPhoto.

If you do not see that conditional statement then your library will simply be upgraded with no additional software required

Exactly as the quote you posted says

The iPhoto Library Upgrader is a tool that prepares libraries from iPhoto '08 (v7.x) or earlier so that you can upgrade them with the current version of iPhoto. If your library is from iPhoto '09 (v8.x) or later, you don't need to use this tool.

Really simple - if you have iphoto '08 or earlier backup your into library and download and run the iPhoto library upgrader and then launch the new iphoto to finish the upgrade - If you have iphoto '09 or l simply backup your iphoto library and launch the new iphoto to do the upgrade

PS simple standard text questions are much preferred without crazy fonts and point size changes

You stated, - "If you have iphoto '09 or l simply backup your iphoto library and launch the new iphoto to do the upgrade"

Ok then how do I simply backup my iPhoto Library.. I've already done my iPhoto upgrade and it will not open! Instead it gives me a popup message which reads: "To open your library with this version of iPhoto, it first needs to be prepared" hence why I copied and pasted the contradiction into my 1st post.

The newest version of iPhoto has been updated, I just cannot get it to open & get to my pictures anymore.

You don't already have a Library back up?

    Most Simple Back Up:

Drag the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to another Disk. This will make a copy on that disk.

Slightly more complex: Use an app that will do incremental back ups. This is a very good way to work. The first time you run the back up the app will make a complete copy of the Library. Thereafter it will update the back up with the changes you have made. That makes subsequent back ups much faster. Many of these apps also have scheduling capabilities: So set it up and it will do the back up automatically.

Example of such apps: Chronosync - but there are many others. Search on MacUpdate or the App Store

All of that should be automatic with the Yosemite update.. why am I having to do all of this when I never have before?

Have all of my thousands of photos been lost? I'm not computer savvy and this is all Greek to me!

Backups are NOT automatic with any OS on any computer - you have to purchase the external hard drive and run the backup software (and if you do not wan tot use TimeMachine which is supplied on yr. Mac) then you need to select and purchase the backup software you prefer over TM

What version of iPhoto do you have installed? What version did you previously have?

Have you RUN the Photo library upgrader? It is installed in the utilities folder of your Applications folder - double click on it to run it and THEN launch iphoto to finish the upgrade

YES I have Time Machine, & YES it was backed up. YES I've run the Library Upgrader but I'm STILL getting the message that I need to prepare the library before I can open it. I'm not sure what version I have, but if you can tell me how to look it up, I'd be more than happy to do so. Please bear with me... I'm a 61 yr-old widowed grandma :-), my husband used to handle these things for us.

Go to your Applications folder and right click on the iphoto Application and get info - the info window will tell you the version

Try Back up your iPhoto library, Depress and hold the option (alt) and command keys and launch iPhoto - from the resulting first aid window repair permissions and if necessary rebuild your database

    Sorry about your husband
