Use Disk Utility (Applications > Utilities) assuming you are talking about an external HD (if it's internal, you'll need to be booted from some other source). You can erase and/or partition (which will erase). You will want MAC OS X Extended (Journaled) and, under Options in the Partitions screen, GUID Partition scheme if you want the drive to be bootable (which not all WD drives support).
