You don't need to pay for updates to apps. If you have an Apple ID and you had been using a credit card, and you don't want to use one now, you shouldn't need to have to enter anything in order to doenload free apps. If you created an Apple ID and it is telling you that you have to enter a credit card, take a look at this.
