Q: safari wont open

Genieo Adware is installed.  You have to remove it.

If you have another browser:

     Use  free  AdwareMedic by clicking “Download ” from here

     http://www.adwaremedic.com/index.php

     Install , open,  and run it by clicking “Scan for Adware” button   to remove adware.

     Once done, quit AdwareMedic by clicking AdwareMedic in the menu bar and selecting

    “Quit AdwareMedic”.

               or

If you don’t have another browser:

     Remove adware  manually  by following the “HowTo” from Apple.

      Safari > Preferences > Extensions

    Turn those off and relaunch Safari again.

    Turn those on one by one and test.

HI, sorry but I'm quite new to Mac's, having the same problem as several people have posted. The Safari 8.0.2 update will not open. It 'bounces' a few times, and every couple of times a pop up saying 'Safari last time closed unexpectedly. ' I don't know how to follow the instructions below, the Safari menus disappear after seconds, so I can't get to preferences. I don't have an alternate browser. Really need some help.

Removing Genieo manually:

Remove Genieo, also known as InstallMac

First follow these steps to stop the Genieo or InstallMac processes, if they're running. Be particularly careful to restart your Mac when instructed.

1. Open the Activity Monitor app:
   You can use Spotlight (Command-Space) to search for "Activity Monitor," then choose Activity Monitor from the search results.
2. In the Activity Monitor window, click the CPU tab, then click Process Name at the top of that column to sort the list alphabetically.
3. Look for the process "Genieo." Select it, then click the Force Quit button in the upper-left corner of the window.
4. Look for the process "InstallMac." Select it, then click the Force Quit button.
5. Quit Activity Monitor.
6. From the Finder, choose Go > Go to Folder.
7. Type /private/etc/launchd.conf in the text field, then press Return.
8. If the file is on your Mac, a window opens with the file you searched for already selected. Drag the file to the Trash.

Restart your Mac, then continue to the next steps, below.Remove the files related to Genieo:

1. Select each item in the list below, starting with /Applications/Genieo.
2. Choose Edit > Copy.
3. From the Finder, choose Go > Go to Folder.
4. Choose Edit > Paste to paste the line you copied into the text field, then press Return.
5. If the file is on your Mac, a window opens with the file you searched for already selected. Drag the file to the Trash.

Repeat the steps above for each item in the following list. If you get a message that the folder can't be found, continue to the next item in the list./Applications/Genieo

Now do the same for each folder in the following list. When these folders open, no file will be selected. Instead, select all items (Command-A) in the folder and drag them all to the Trash.~/Library/Application Support/Genieo/

Restart your Mac, then continue to the next steps, below.

1. From the Finder, choose Go > Go to Folder.
2. Type /Library/Frameworks/GenieoExtra.framework in the text field, then press Return.
3. If the file is on your Mac, a window opens with the file you searched for already selected. Drag the file to the Trash.

Restart your Mac, then choose Finder > Empty Trash to permanently remove the files.

II've tried that but neither of those processes appear in the activity monitor under CPU tab

I'm unclear on which of dominic23's instructions you have followed thus far. If you followed his suggestion to download AdwareMedic and use it to scan for adware, and nothing was found, there's no point in continuing to look for adware manually. AdwareMedic would have detected all Genieo-related files if they were there.

If you didn't do that, I'd definitely recommend it. As the developer of AdwareMedic, I could be considered biased (), but it really is the easiest way to get rid of Genieo. However, if you feel a little wary of trusting some unknown third-party app (understandable) and want to follow the manual removal instructions, be aware that not all variants of Genieo will have a "Genieo" or "InstallMac" process running, and thus you won't necessarily find them in Activity Monitor. Just proceed with the rest of the directions.

I have same issue can not find the above named process in activity monitor

should i put my report here?

I Checked in the activity log and found no mention of genieo. However I'd looked with an alternative program (not Adwaremedic) which indicated genieo but could not remove it. As I cant open safari at all I can't download any software to help, and adware is not available on App Store I believe.  I'm not sure how to proceed. does this mean that it's just not running now, so I can go ahead. Concerned about the computer freezing as described.

Please start your own thread. It gets very confusing to assist more than one person per thread, as minor differences in computer configs and OS versions may make your solution different from others.

That also gives you the community's full attention without diluting help the original poster of this thread deserves.

AdwareMedic is not available through the App Store, no. It needs to be able to do things forbidden to App Store apps.

If you don't have any other alternate browser installed to use for the download, and don't have another computer you could use for the download (and then transfer the app via a flash drive), then it will probably be easiest to follow manual removal instructions. In that case, if Apple's instructions aren't working for you, perhaps my own instructions will be clearer for you. See:

Just be sure to read the instructions carefully, and follow them precisely, as some variants of Genieo can be a bit difficult to remove.

If all else fails, let us know... there are ways you can download files through the command line, using the Terminal. If absolutely necessary, you could download AdwareMedic that way.
