Q: how to retrieve photos from backup

Hello Experts, I'm new on MAC OS. I have recently bought a Mac Book Pro laptop and uploaded lots of photos. Till yesterday data was there. But while searching today, I couldn't see any photos in iPhotos. I didn't make any changes in the system. Appreciate if any one can help me on this. I have backup data on my external hard disk. I would like to know about restoring backup data as well.

You have a backup, so the only thing you have to do is to restore the iPhoto library.

iPhoto stores all photos in the iPhoto library, which is in the Pictures folder by default, so first open a Finder window and go to the Pictures folder. Then, you have to open the Time Machine app (in /Applications/Utilities, or in the Time Machine icon on the menu bar), so the Time Machine interface will show up. Use the arrows to navigate through your backups until you find one when iPhoto was working properly, so select the iPhoto library and press "Restore".

Check your user/home folder/Pictures and see if the iPhoto Library is there. If so, try rebuilding the Library.

    iPhoto Library rebuild

Then open iPhoto and see if it works.

It it is not there and your backup is with Time Machine, in the Finder Sidebar, select your hard drive. Then from the Dock, click Time Machine. That will open the application. Wait for the backup to load ( use shift - command - c.    Information learned from Linc Davis. if not all backups load) Then on the right side select a time/date when the Library    was there. Once in that backup, then Users/your user/Pictures/iPhoto Library. Then select restore. Please note, Time Machine does take some time to load, so be patient. For all things about Time Machine.

    Dear Mende1,

Thank you for the quick response. What could be reason for the data loss. The only change what I have done is that I have changed the display settings in the view finder preferences, under 'New Finder windows show:' I have changed the view items from 'All my files' to home. Kindly help me in this. Is the reason for not displaying the photos is this change ?

    Regards,

It should cause a data lost. Can you find the user/home Picture folder to check there? Did you try rebuilding the Library?

    Dear Eric,

Thanks for the reply. Unfortunately I do not have the backup as well. If we change the view finder settings, how it's deleting the data ? I would like to know more about rebuilding the Library ? in user/home/picture no data is found.

Are you sure you loaded them into iPhoto and not just your pictures folder?
