Q: Can I store things in iCloud drive and not have them on my computer

Is there a way to upload documents, videos, etc, to iCloud drive without taking up space on my hard drive... must the material live in both places.. I store photos in Flickr uploading them to the website on the internet.. not synced to my computer.. if I start to put all of me videos into the iCloud drive it will take away from my storage space on my computer? Is that correct?

Thanks.. any knowledge welcomed..

No. It syncs to your computer. iCloud drive is not a replacement for local storage.

I don't believe anyone has found a way to do that yet.

Maybe in later versions of MacOS X.   But presently, any file you move to iCloud Drive will have a shadow copy on Mac, that is using iCloud drive. These shadow copies live in your User Library.  To keep them on an external drive, you would have to move your complete user home folder to an external drive.  That would be cumbersome on a portable computer.  On a desktop computer it would be feasible.

See the FAQ:  iCloud Drive FAQ

iClud Drive is meant to be used as a central storage place, that will keep any changes to your documents updated across all your devices.

You are so right... I guess I will continue cloud storage with alternative solutions that don't have to live on my computer.. I have access and can download them when necessary... thanks so much...

Your welcome. That is a good plan.

Use the cloud storage only for things that need to be synced between devices, like Mail, Notes, Calendars and important documents.

Your iTunes library, iMovie Library. and your iPhoto/Aperture library can live on external drives and do not need to be in iCloud. To keep your Music in iCloud, use iTunes Match. It will not keep shadow copies.
