iPhone -54 error. Cannot be synced

I have been unable to apply updates to apps on my iPhone. Continually get "cannot connect to Apple Store". When I checked to see when last iCloud backup took place, I cannot connect to iCloud.

Using iTunes and USB connection, I receive a message that phone cannot be backed up THEN cannot be synced. "iPhone -54 error"
