Q: Track pad stopped responding/clicking and tapping failed

I have a new 15" Retina MacBook Pro and sudenly I was unable to tap and release something and tried the track pad to do it "manually" and the trackpad went quiet on me.  Ie clicking didn't work/click and tapping and dragging did not a lot either.  I had to, in fact, shut down as I was unable to get verification of permissions to run without it stopping (I had managed to tap to get it started but it kept stopping too as the cursor was stuck on the start/stop button.

It has since started clicking again but this took a couple of shut downs and restart after I finally managed to repair permissions.

Why would it physically  stop clicking (and erasing text and cursor jumping around)?

MacBook Pro with Retina display, OS X Mavericks (10.9), Panasonic HVX201 & Final Cut Pro 7

I don't  why trackpad behaved like this in this case.

Repairing permissions is one of the steps I suggest to take when the trackpad is not functioning

properly and the mouse pointer is jumpy.

    Best.

Thank you for the answer.  Everything had been fine for the past three months of using the MacBook Pro, was in the middle of light use when it began, managed to repair permissions, restarted it a second time and it was better in that the track-pad at least began clicking once more but then typing here, to ask the question turned into a nightmare with text being highlighted as I typed and deleted without contact of the track-pad.  It was like I had gone mad.  Very erratic.  It has since calmed down but I am left worried what the Gremlin might be...
