Rentals from iTunes
do I need wifi to watch a rented iTunes movie? I am heading out on an 18 train ride that has no wifi.

You don't need internet if movie is completely downloaded to iPad.

I have no personal experience with this, but I did think you needed internet access to start watching the movie. The rental allows you to access the movie for some period after you start watching it (24 hours in the U.S.). It is my impression that this start time is recorded - using the internet.
My recommendation is you start watching the movie (just a few seconds) while you still have internet access, and then watch the whole movie on the train later.
That issue is not addressed here, but just for your information...
