Setting up a DMZ for ViaTalk VOIP on Time Capsule or Any Airport product

I do not believe that my Time Capsule is in fact following setting the DMZ or opening the ports needed for my Linksys VOIP adapter to operate.

ViaTalk is a VOIP provider, using the Linksys PAP2T as the adapter.

ViaTalk Support had me set up the TC as following:

-Select "Enable NAT Port Mapping Protocol" then "Enable Default Host at" and assign the IP address to the computer on your network you want to set up as the default host. The default address is 10.0.1.253 but you will want to enter the ip address from the Linksys Adapter (I go this via picking up the phone connected to the ViaTalk adapter and press **** to access the configuration menu. When prompted for an option number, press 110#. The IP address of the phone adapter will be read back to you.)

- I also added a DHCP reservation. I set the IPv4 address to match the Linksys IP address, and used the MAC Address of the Linksys adapter (it's printed on the adapter).

- Speaking with ViaTalk Tech, they thought the above steps would do it, but when it didn't I tried this: Network>Port Settings> and added two Ports (5080 and 5081) in both Public and Private UDP Ports.

I'm using a Motoral SurfBoard Cable Modem. The Time Capsule is acting as a DHCP and NAT Router and Creating a Wireless Network. I have two Airport Extremes in Bridge Mode on the network.

The ViaTalk adapter worked fine when plugged into a Uverse Modem/Router, but with as the Comcast Motorola modem isn't a router, the TC has to be the router in my set up.

Any ideas on what other settings I could try on the Time Capsule??

Network>Port Settings> and added two Ports (5080 and 5081) in both Public and Private UDP Ports.

SIP uses 5060 unless you have specifically set it to another port. Opening 5080 and 5081 will not work if the voip provider expects you to use 5060.

It should be 5060 and 5061. Was it just a typo?

It also needs the RTP ports opened. This is UDP but it is unusual if you use ports below 10,000 for RTP.. again this has to be set correctly. Often you set 10,000-20,000 as the ports are chosen randomly.

if STUN is support by your vsp also set that. It can help keep the ports open..

Don't forget if you manually forward ports, to shut off DMZ.. I would start afresh with a factory reset.

In the end buy a standard router with upnp.. and stick the Apple router in bridge.. they are fine with apple products.. and when apple makes a voip phone I am sure it will be great.. until then it is useless. In bridge the apple can provide wireless and hard disk access to the LAN.

Thank you! The provider specified that I was to use 5080 and 5081. I can try 5060/1 next.

They said I only needed to use the UDP port settings, you mention RTP ports, but in the Airport Utility I only see TCP and UDP as the options, and I don't know anything about STUN. Any tips on how to go about making those suggested changes?

I had left DMZ on when I set the UDP ports to open - ViaTalk thought that was OK, but I can change that.

You're right that just buying a router could solve this - I should have bought the Motorola Surfboard w/Router instead of as a stand-alone.

Will post after I try the 5060/61 and turning off the DMZ.

you mention RTP ports,

Sorry that was clear as mud..

RTP is the actual voice service that goes over UDP packets. So I should have said you need to open the ports required by RTP.

Look at the PAP2T as it should show what ports are required for it.

I had left DMZ on when I set the UDP ports to open - ViaTalk thought that was OK, but I can change that.

It is not ok.. they will compete with one another..

You should also turn off upnp in the PAP2T. Everything that confuses the port opening can mess things up.

The online info for your VSP is about the worst from any voip provider I have ever seen.

There instructions consist of open every single port from 1025 to the top of the range. 65535. In other words devote every port in existence to our service and it might work oh and you need port 69 as well. That is the universal answer for everything.. open every port and it will work.. bad luck about every other device in the network.

Is there a way to set a range on the TC?

Yes.. the instructions for port forwarding are here.

AirPort - Port Mapping Basics using AirPort Utility v6.x

Simply put the ports with a dash between them..
