The only way to play the file via Chrome is to download it.

Chrome is doing this a bit earlier than others but the handwriting is now on the wall.

I'm using a QNAP server and it's native playback method is routing the file to the browser. The file when clicked plays fine in safari, but the same file when clicked in Chrome just turns into a download
