Q: iphoto stuck in repairing library

All,

I do store my iPhoto library on my network server, allowing for access from multiple Macs. All after a sudden, iPhoto told me "The photo library needs to be upgraded to work with this version of iPhoto.". Even though, I have not upgraded iphoto i.e. I am still on 9.5.1. Please note, I am also still on OS X 10.9.5 and have not yet transferred to Yosemite.

 

I have tried "ALT><CMD> <click iphoto> to run iPhotos "Photo Library First Aid Agent". However, the program will always abort at some stage. Using "iphoto Library Manager" will bring back all photos but no albums will be recreated.

 

In other words, I am left with >100k photos but no albums??

Any ideas?

    The following is from this Apple document: iPhoto: Sharing libraries among multiple users - Apple Support.  Note the part in bold.

    It's recommended that you store your iPhoto library on a locally mounted hard drive. Storing your iPhoto library on a network share can lead to poor performance, data corruption, or data loss. If you use both iPhoto and Aperture with the same library, using a Mac OS X Extended formatted volume is recommended.

     

    In addition accessing the library wirelessly can lead to damaged libraries if there's a dropout while writing to the library's database file.

     

    So to get reliable iPhoto Library sharing among multiple users the library should be placed on a hard wired external HD whose format is OS X Extended (journaled) with ownership set to be ignored:

    iPhoto is not a multi user program, can not be used on a network server and can not be used over a network

     

    To share an iPhoto library it must be on a directly connected external had drive - iPhoto: Sharing libraries among multiple users - Apple Support
