How do I select debit or credit with an ATM card?

When I use my card manually at retailers, I always have the option to pay by debit or by credit. This is done by making the appropriate selections on the card scanner touch screen. How does this work with Apple Pay? Do I have to set the card to have a default of either credit or debit?
