Q: What spreadsheet apps work with iPad, Lion?

I have generated a number of spreadsheets using Appleworks 6.2.9,and can continue to use that approach.  But I'd like to work on those files with Lion (which I have as an option on my Mac Pro) and with IPad (which I plan to acquire).  Numbers seems to offer an option, but I have, on my Snow Leopard disc, iWork '09, which contains Numbers as one of its components. I can't open any of the iWork '09 components.  My Lion disc does contain Excel.  I have not yet tried to import one of the Appleworks Spreadsheets into Excel, so that may be a possibility.  But, does Excel work with iPad?  And, does the answer depend on the iPad version?

Mac Pro, Mac OS X (10.6.8), Early '06, Also use OS 10.5 & 10.7

That's my post, up above.  Seems maybe I'm replying to a non-existent post.  Maybe this will get both to where someone might respond

I would standardize on Excel .xls on OS X Lion, and Excel for IOS (.xls) on your new iPad for round trip document compatibility without translation. The IOS MS Office apps do not require an Office 365 subscription, and Microsoft has finally made the IOS apps read/write for normal functionality. Advanced features would require a Microsoft subscription. Apple's IOS 7 and IOS 8 Numbers application document format is no longer backwards compatible with Numbers '09.

On demand, export your AppleWorks 6 spreadsheets to Excel .xls format.

Now, you have future liberation from Apple proprietary document formats and incompatibilities.
