why doesn't deleting files free up storage space in my iPad

My iPad keeps warning me I'm running low on storage space. I have since deleted half the files in my photos/movies app to no avail. Data usage still says 5.7 GB of space being used by this app - which is exactly what it was before I deleted so many files. What needs to be done? Couldn't find a recycle bin to clean out - don't even know if such an animal exists with apple systems.

iPad, iOS 8.1, using iMovie app

Hi corpore.sano,

Happy Holidays! Have you updated your iPad to version 8.1.2? If so, in the Photos app, there is a new album called Recently Deleted. If your photos are in there and you want to delete them permanently, you can tap Select, and then tap Delete All to free up the space on your iPad.

  • Delete a photo or video from Photos. Tap the Photos tab, tap the photo or video, tap User uploaded file, then tap Delete Photo or Delete Video. Deleted photos and videos are kept in the Recently Deleted album on iPad, with a badge showing the remaining days until the item is permanently removed from iPad. To delete the photo or video permanently before the days expire, tap the item, tap Delete, then tap Delete Photo or Delete Video. If you use iCloud Photo Library beta, deleted photos and videos are permanently removed from all iOS 8.1 devices that use iCloud Photo Library beta with the same Apple ID.

  • Recover a deleted photo or video. In the Recently Deleted album, tap the photo or video, tap Recover, then tap Recover Photo or Recover Video to move the item to the Camera Roll or, if you use iCloud Photo Library beta, the All Photos album.

How does iCloud delete photos and videos from iCloud Photo Library?

Deleting a photo or video from your Photos app will also remove the item from iCloud Photo Library and from your iCloud storage allocation. Photos and videos you remove can be recovered from the Recently Deleted album for 30 days. After 30 days, your content will be removed from the Recently Deleted album. Photos are backed up on our servers for up to 30 days after they're deleted from the Photos app. If you need to recover these photos during that time, contact Apple Support.

I hope this information helps ....

Hello Judysings,

Happy Holidays to you! Thanks for the help with my problem. I just

installed the updated version yesterday so the timing of your response was

perfect. Would never have found the 'deleted photo/video' file if you

hadn't informed me of it. That was definitely a useful upgrade and solved

my problem! Thanks a whole lot! Regards, Dave
