I'm sorry to hear you are having issues syncing your iPhone after a recent iTunes update. I also apologize, I'm a bit unclear on exactly which button you are referring to in your account settings, and/or what you are seeing when you connect your iPhone to your computer. If you are possibly talking about having turned on the option to manually manage the content on your iPhone, you may find the following article helpful:

On the other hand, if your iPhone does not appear to be showing up at all in iTunes (you mention not seeing the phone icon in the top bar), then this article may be more useful:
