Dec 23, 2014 7:24 AM in response to rattlegirl21by The hatter,By the time Lion came out in mid-2011 systems do not have install and recovery discs, they have the ability in firmware to connect to the internet and Apple AppStore and download a small nub to start an install or to perform an system diagnostic.
When you do download the system, before running the install package (which it wants to begin) you should save the installer and make a flash drive installer, just to save the time and bandwidth to have a local copy.
Early 2011 did come with 10.6.7+ OEM DVD but any system with SATA III / USB3 / Thunderbolt would need Lion and would be using Internet Recovery.
You should already have a Recovery Partition. If not, use the utility to create one.OS X: About Recovery Disk Assistant - Apple Support
