If your songs are located on an external hard drive, should the library files still be located at \Users\username\Music\iTunes\?

Hello, not necessarily. You can move the entire iTunes folder you mentioned to the external HDD as well. Here's the manual: Back up your iTunes library by copying it to an external drive - Apple Support

The problem I am having is that my music (and all other iTunes media) is on an external hard drive but the library files are on my C: drive. I think that's the source of why my rececently purchased SONOS is stopping/starting all the time when playing music from my library (does not happen when using music services like Songza). I'm not sure how to fix it once it is already set this way?
