    Welcome to the Apple Community.

AirPlay Mirroring requires a second-generation Apple TV or later, OS X 10.8 or better and is supported on the following Mac models: iMac (Mid 2011 or newer), Mac mini (Mid 2011 or newer), MacBook Air (Mid 2011 or newer), and MacBook Pro (Early 2011 or newer). You can see which Mac you have and which operating system you are using by selecting 'About this Mac' from the Apple menu in the top left corner of your Mac and selecting the 'More Info' button.

AirPlay Mirroring from a Mac also requires a fairly robust network.

If your profile is correct, you need to update your OS.

thanks for the welcome and for replying.

everything checks out as you mentioned above, except for OS being at 10.7.5. No updates available yet when I click on Software Update.

apple tv works perfectly from my girlfriend's new macbook on OSX 10.10 Yosemite.

i'll be on the look out, hopefully the upgrade fixes it.

    many thanks and happy holidays.

The nomenclature for updates v upgrades etc is often argued over, but essentially 10.7 to 10.8 would be a major upgrade and 10.7.5 to 10.7.6 would be a minor one (although please note there is no 10.7.6), the difference being that minor updates will be made available through software updates, whereas major upgrades are sold through the Mac App store and have to be installed as a new purchase (even though they are now free). Once an operating system is superseded by another it is usually withdrawn from the Mac App store and you will need to acquire a code to get a copy.

You can check here, to see which operating system you can run.
