As a new owner of an apple6plus can someone please tell me how to delete both messages and contact entries no longer required?

From the iPhone User Guide (iOS 8.1), page 75:
Also - another method - in iOS 8.1.x - there is an "Edit" link at the right top of the iMessage app when it is open and there are message threads. Clicking on that enables one to highlight the message threads that one wants to delete.
The delete link is at the bottom right
Can someone advise me as to how to delete iMessages from my very new apple6plus phone as I am a true beginner?
