Q: My Mac Air won't let my headphones listen to music

I'm not entirely sure when this happened, but it did, and I have no idea how to fix it.

This is the strangest thing that's ever happened. I can listen to music, play videos, and get sound when I don't use my headphones. So I know that the internal speakers are completely fine. But whenever I plug in my headphones into the headphone port, I can't listen to anything. The videos play, but there's no sound. I can't even listen to iTunes anymore. And the weirdest thing is that I went to System Preferences>Sound, and I clicked on the alert sounds with my headphones plugged into the jack, and I can hear them. I can hear the alert sounds, but I can't listen to music on iTunes or sound from videos on the Internet.

My question is how do I fix this? I really need to my Mac to let me listen to sound on my headphones.

MacBook Air, OS X Mavericks (10.9.5)
