Yes, using the additional built in graphics card AMD Radeon HD 6630M you can use 4k at 30Hz. You will see a refresh rate of 60 Hz, so no flicker with 30 Hz. Just the signal information is updated at 30 Hz, so you will recognize scrolling not fluently. But even videos when not in 4k are displayed fine.

Reading the specs is silver, proving is gold ;-)

Reading the specs may be Silver, proving is Gold - but you simply asserted it could be accomplished without any other evidence or steps - that's Lead!

Please tell us how you accomplished this in more detail.

Necessary is using a OS X version that allows it. I do not know the exact version which is needed but at least 10.10 Yosemite should work. Thats all.

Using the displayport on the Mini SwitchResX can be used to set a custom resolution with a rate of 30 Hz or even higher.

What means your sentence with Lead? Repeating Apple's official statements years ago is lead when not corrrect anymore. When you only dont know how it works that is for you a problem, sure, but to know that it could be done should be a big step forward, so dont be so negative to me!

The Mac mini i5 is that of a friend. I am using a 2012 Mac mini with 2,6 GHz and a 40" Philips BDM4065UC at 3840x2160 and 30 Hz. Officially not working, but doing it in front of me since half a year! Even 3072x1728 at 37 Hz and 3200x1800 at 34 Hz are possible with this Mini.

I certainly believe it is possible but without Gold-plated specifics - i.e., exact SwitchResX parameters and description of your hardware/cabling setup - your statements are admirable but not so useful, more like Lead.

You have not tried it otherwise you would not say what you say. Its so simple and your idea of having the correct settings is completely unnecessary. Try it and dont kick me on my foots! I know what I am saying you instead are just giving your thoughts.

And please: no additional comments without any experience in this.

I have a mid-2011 Mac Mini i7 with HD6630M running Mavericks 10.9.5 with SwitchResX installed, interfaced via HDMI or MiniDisplayPort/HDMI converter to a 4K-capable HDMI input on a Samsung KS8000 4K TV.

I have already spent about 3 hours with it yesterday and couldn't find any combination of output ports, cables and SwitchResX settings that would drive the monitor at anything but 1920x1080 (progressive or interlaced.)

Since you appear to have it working, how about telling us what SPECIFIC combination of output ports, cables and SwitchResX settings you are using to get 4K output on your Philips BDM4065UC.

It seems to depend if your display supports multi-stream transport (MST) or single-stream transport SST).

    What does you monitor support?

    Some support both?

If you have the chance to install OS X 10.10 or 10.11 do that and you will not have to deal with limitations of 10.9.

In 10.9 you are right you can spend much time and get frustrated. In 10.10 or above no special cable is necessary.

The monitor will be recognized as a 4k and driven with its native resolution. Plug and play. So at least on a Mac mini 2012 when I remember right.
