Thanks for your help, everyone on this thread.

I've posted my story in the 10.6 forum under a new thread, "New HD, HD cable, and re-installed OS, and several application not cooperating: what to do?" if you would care to check in on it sometime.

Good Luck in the new thread!

Just to link to your new thread:  New HD, HD cable, and re-installed OS, and several applications not cooperating: what to do?

Here is what worked for me (and I feel like a complete and total dolt!):

    >>I was looking through my TM machine backups in order to restore to the preferred backup and noticed that for the last year I've been running 10.8.5(!).  I had no idea and here's why: First, I have had zero reasons to check on my operating system in the last year.  Second, back in January 2014, I had upgraded to Mavericks (from 10.6.8), had a bunch of quirky system and software issues, so I downgraded back to what I would swear on was 10.6.8.  Third, I have never installed Mountain Lion!

    >>At this point, after SO much adware/malware sleuthing (and I did learn a lot), I decided to upgrade to Mavericks again--for one, the message had been screaming at me at least when attempting to open Notes and Launchpad, "You can't use this version of the application X with this version of Mac OSX.  You have 10.6.8.  The app requires 10.7 or later."  (Dolt!).

    >>So, I erased and installed 10.6.3 from disc (again), updated software, the updated to Mavericks (from App Store because I had already downloaded it--did you know, it is no longer available unless you previously downloaded it?).  Then I restored from TM backup (in which I was operating 10.8.5 for reason(s) unbeknownst to me) and all is beautiful again.

I can't believe I did not try upgrading OS in the first place.  But thankfully, I've had time in the last few weeks to figure this out as I've recovered 10,000 precious photos and who knows what else.

PS, I posted also posted this in a different (10.6 forum) thread: New HD, HD cable, and re-installed OS, and several applications not cooperating: what to do?
