Q: iMessage Group MMS becomes iMessage when iPhone user added

Yet another ex-iPhone user not able to receive messages, but this seems to be occurring on my friend's iPhone. I de-registered from iMessage in 2013 and have been receiving MMS and group messages on my Android with no problem. Lately, after iOS 8 maybe, I can't receive group messages from a particular iPhone user.

He sent me screenshots to show what happens. I can't share them here but can describe them:

1) He creates a new message to me. The phone shows it will send as SMS. (at this point, texting back-and-forth works great for both of us).

2) He adds an iPhone user to the conversation in iMessage. The text bubbles become blue and the iPhone user is the only one who sees new messages from my friend.

At this point, I can compose a group MMS on my phone that will be seen by both iPhone users, but they have to reply to me individually in order for me to see it.

I've ensured my phone number is no longer registered with iMessage using Apple's website. I think the problem is on my friend's end since I made no changes before this trouble started. Is there anything I can tell him to change to stop this from happening without disabling his ability to send iMessages to other iPhone users?

Thanks.
