OSX Yosemite won't boot after install on mid 2010 iMac

After installing Yosemite then booting for the first time, my computer is stuck at 20-30%. See the attached image for what I'm getting.

I've booted into safe mode (I can do that successfully but it runs very slow) and repaired permissions and the disk twice. I've reset the pram and i've unplugged everything from it (including power cord and ethernet) and let it sit for 20 minutes. None of these fixes have solved my problem. Computer was working great before this update...

I have not backed up the hard drive. So any other ideas besides wiping the disk would be helpful. Thanks in advance.

Reinstalling OS X Without Erasing the Drive

Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.

Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.

When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.

Reinstall OS X: Select Reinstall OS X and click on the Continue button.

Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

Then you need to start from scratch:

Install or Reinstall OS X from Scratch

Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.

Boot to the Recovery HD:

Erase the hard drive:

1. Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.

2. After DU loads select your startup volume (usually Macintosh HD) from the

left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.

3. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.)

4. Quit DU and return to the main menu.

Reinstall OS X: Select Reinstall OS X and click on the Continue button.

Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible

because it is three times faster than wireless.

If you can boot into Safe Mode, then the problem is likely some incompatible software. And yes, you can back up your data from Safe Mode once booted into it.

What kind of incompatible software could it be? I mean it would be easier to go in with safe mode and delete the software causing the problem but I'm not sure where to look.

While in safe Mode, download and run this, http://www.etresoft.com/etrecheck

It won't tell what is causing it, but it will show what is installed. If we recognize anything, we can suggest where to start.

Uninstall DoubleCommand: Path: /Library/StartupItems/DoubleCommand by deleting it from the folder it's in.
Uninstall: Genieo and Conduit. These are adware - see: The Safe Mac » Adware Removal Guide and AdwareMedic and Remove unwanted adware that displays pop-up ads and graphics on your Mac - Apple Support.
Uninstall the LogMeIn software.

Restart the computer.
