Very slow boot up on OS X Yosemite

Hi Guys,

I have an early 2011 MBP running on 8GB RAM.

Although the boot times have been getting slow with each OS X upgrade, I have noticed that the boot up time on OS X Yosemite is very very slow.

I have noticed the following when the apple logo shows up with the progress bar on boot up

1. Progress bar reaches 20-25% and then literally halts for some time

2. Progress bar then reaches ~50% and again halts for sometime

After that things are smooth.

I have already tried a PRAM reset.

Could someone please help me get around this problems.

TIA !

Try these in order testing your system after each to see if it's back to normal:

1. a. Resetting your Mac's PRAM and NVRAM

b. Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)

2. Restart the computer in Safe Mode, then restart again, normally. If this doesn't help, then:

Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the Utilities menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.

3. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.

When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.

4. Reinstall Yosemite: Reboot from the Recovery HD. Select Reinstall OS X from the Utilities menu, and click on the Continue button.

Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible

because it is three times faster than wireless.

5. Reinstall Yosemite from Scratch:

Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.

How to Clean Install OS X Yosemite

Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible

because it is three times faster than wireless.

Hello,

Thank you so much for your quick response.

I tried everything except a reinstalling the OS and a clean install and nothing worked so far.

Well i tried the reinstallation but for some reason it seems to quit with error. I have sent an error report to apple, lets see what they come up with.

I will update as and when I do the things suggest.

Thanks again!

PS: Shouldn't apple be looking into this problem cause I see every OS X Yosemite user suffering from this.

I can't speak for Apple. It's impossible for anyone to know what Apple is doing except Apple. And, even if you send them a report you are unlikely to ever hear back unless they require additional information.

If you cannot perform a reinstallation, then that's a sign you may need to erase the drive and start from scratch.

Merry Christmas 🙂

I am going to try this tonight , as soon as I get hold of a Pen Drive.

BTW I ran an EtreCheck and found this : It says something about obsolete start up items. Can i safely remove them ?

Hard to say. Do you have any idea what installed them? You can put them in the Trash, but don't Empty the Trash. Then restart the computer. If you don't have any problems then it's probably safe to Empty the Trash. While your at it:

Get rid of CleanMyMac. It is unneeded and can cause slowdowns and use memory unnecessarily. I see you are running Virtual Box, but I also note an entry for VMWare, so if you also have Fusion installed, then uninstall one of the two. No need for two of them.

Dec 25, 2014 10:52 AM in response to Kappy

I guess they were installed by the previous OS version. But I did remove them and the bouts was success full.

Another thing i noticed is that not its slow booting up at around 20 to 30% of the Progress bar, once its passed that it boots relatively quicker.

Thanks for the hints on cleanmymac , removed it and also some obsolete startup stuff.

I will now get back to repairing the permissions of the disk again and also resetting the PRAM and then see it it works. If things don't change i guess il make my peace with this slow boot up speed.

Thanks for you help!

Same problem here, tried all the fixes too - ultimately it's very hard not to see it as a purposeful slowing down of older computers to force users to upgrade. This is cold hard commerce, but from my point of view I spent a **** of a lot of money on a top-of-the-line 2011 17" MacBook Pro with 16GB of RAM which I thought would have good enough specs to be useable for a good few years - do Apple really expect people to spend that kind of money every couple of years!!?? That's not going to happen for a vast majority of users so the typical experience of an Apple customer is one of frustration brought about by Apple's greed and thirst for ever increasing profit (on which they pay very little tax abroad).

Of course Apple will say it's simply a case of older computers not being able to keep up with all the amazing new features of their updated software but really how necessary are all these updates, how "amazing" are these new features? Personally I'm not interested in about 95% of them, I just want an operating system that works quickly and reliably so I can perform my work capably but unfortunately that's no longer possible without spending an obscene amount of money every couple of years. I've also noticed a lot of the pro software I use has become severely impaired by recent updates, and that's on a variety of machines all the way up to a top-of-the-line 2014 Mac Pro. Although it pains me to say, it may well be time for me to investigate Windows for my needs...

Very slow boot up on OS X Yosemite
