Q: How can I update my iPod classic that will not mount on iMac computer?

I can't update my iPod classic from my iTunes on my iMac computer with OSX 10.9.  It will not mount or be recognized by iTunes version 12.1.

I plug it into the USB port and it charges, gives the "Do not disconnect" symbol but the computer does not recognize or mount the iPod at all.  I haven't been able to update the music for years. I have four other devices associated with my Apple ID for automatic downloads. Is it too antiquated to upload any of my music from my computer to it anymore?

    Hi

I'm having the same problem.  I've gone through the iPod Troubelshooting Assistant but none of it worked.  I've tried different USB port on my MBP and different USB cable.  I'm running Yosemite 10.10.2 and iTunes 12.0.1.26.  My iPad and iPhone are working fine, just not my iPod Classic.  It's showing on the Desktop but not in iTunes.

    Any suggestions?

    Many thanks!

    Amy

I am having this issue as well on a iPod Video 30 gb. Mounts on the desktop, iTunes will not recognize.
    Running Yosemite (latest), iTunes 12.0.1.26
Even tried opening iTunes in 32 bit mode. No results.

Tried the troubleshooting guide to the point of nausea. No changes.
I'm hoping to to get this fixed because the old girl is due for another battery (#3) and I'm planning to convert it to a Compact Flash Drive iPod with the adapter.

This is a problem with iTunes mobile device drivers that iTunes installs in verison 12.0.1. I have a MacPro and a MacbookPro with the latest iTunes and Yosemite software and neither will show my iPod classic in iTunes but will mount on the desktop. I also have a iMac with a older version of iTunes and it mounts in iTunes fine. I a going to try to install a older version of the mobile device drivers and see what happens, will report back if I get it working again.

    Excellent news Douglas!

I did some web scouring and found the .ipsw file for the iPod classic firmware. My copy of iTunes appeared to load it fine, but I won't know if this will provide a solution until I get my old 5G iPod back together.

    Keeping my fingers crossed!

    Hi Geoffrey

I have followed your post (googled and found the .ipsw file for iPod classic firmware.  Please can you expand on how you get iTunes to load it as mine doesn't seem to do anything!

    Many thanks!

    Hello!

All I have done so far is double-click the file, iTunes started up, and the loading status progress bar flashed from 0% to 100% very quickly. I'm hoping that iTunes installed the file in the right place, but I cannot be sure at this time. Give it a try. Perhaps iTunes has enough smarts to do the right thing.

I have restored my iPod on my wifes iMac and it works fine there, and also my friend next door. Both have the lasted versions of iTunes and OS X, but I still can not connect to my MacPro or my MacBook Pro. Both are running the same versions of iTunes and OS X, so its not a issue with the iPod. The only thing I see that is different are some framework files which I have copied over to may MacPro, still noting. All this used to work so something has changed in iTunes or Mac OS. It has got me really baffled. For now I just loaded my iTunes Library on my wifes iMac and synced and it works fine.

    Ahh! The plot thickens!

I went thru the console and read the error logs. It appears that the .ipsw file does load.....I think. It's been years since I spoke computer....

Here is what I got after double clicking the .ipsw file and iTunes opened:

I have a problem that may be related: when I plug my iPod 30gig into my MacBook Pro, iTunes 12 recognizes it as my iPad 2. It does mount in the Finder. It works fine on my other MacBook Pro running the same version of Yosemite and iTunes.
