New HD, HD cable, and re-installed OS, and several applications not cooperating: what to do?

MacBook Pro mid/late 2009, 13", 10.6.8

Hi, all.

Thanks in advance to all who can point me in the right direction!

Although this (may) sounds like a software issue at the outset, I have been directed to this (OSX 10.6) forum. [My original post is under the iLife/iPhoto forum and the thread is titled "iPhoto 8.1.2 doesn't work after reinstalled the OS 10.6.8?". If you are interested to see a couple brief comments of what others have had to say, check it out.]

In short, I have two applications (Mail and my precious iPhoto) that give a lengthy "Problem Report" when I attempt to open them, and two applications (Launchpad and Notes) that tell me I can't run the application with this version of mac OS. I have attempted to re-install Mail and iPhoto with no success and I have re-installed the OS (10.6 disc, 10.6.3 disc, and Software Update's 10.6.8) with no progress towards fixing Mail and iPhoto.

Here is the story:

iPhoto will not open and gives the error message ("Check with the developer to make sure iPhoto works with this version of Mac OS X.......")--as does Mail. (On another note, Launchpad and Notes, when attempting to open, give a me a, "You can't use this version of the application Launchpad with this version of Mac OSX. You have 10.6.8. The app requires 10.7 or later." Although, I do not use Launchpad or Notes, it would be nice to have all applications working again.)

I have tried reinstalling iPhoto (carefully, i.e., removing the old app and pkg files) with no luck. Note that in this case, I am using an iLife disc.

Hardware story: My computer had a plethora or issues several months ago--eventually not booting--I left it alone for a couple months while using a friend's computer in the interim. Eventually I had my laptop diagnosed as a having a bad HD. I replaced it myself (upgrading to a Western Digital, 7200 rpm and 750 GB). I had to troubleshoot when it came time to erase the new HD and ended up replacing the HD cable--then my computer was up and running (thus, although I have not checked experimentally, my old HD may actually have been OK all along).

Software story: I reinstalled my OS (10.6 from disc, 10.6.3 from disc, 10.6.8 using Software Update). Then restored using the most recent Time Machine backup prior to my computer initially having "a plethora of problems"--TM backup from external HD. If you've read all this, you are now caught up. My computer boots like a charm, Firefox works, Microsoft Office applications work, even iTunes works. But my precious iPhoto, Mail, and a couple other applications will not cooperate.

Here is the "Problem Report for iPhoto" minus all of the lines below "Binary images" (Note that the Problem Report when attempting to open Mail is more or less the same, e.g., the Dyld Error Message is the same):

Below is my latest EtreCheck.

I have removed (following instructions very carefully) any downlite/genieo files (see EtreCheck report)

I tried reinstalling the operating system.

I am back to "ground zero", having the same issues as in my original post (e.g., iPhoto/Mail/Safari won't open and each generates the same crash report--see original post at top of page).

What next?

>>Should I get rid of any and all files within the Launch Daemon/Agent folders?

>>In regards to the second Genieo Uninstall link above (Re: Does someone know how to remove safely Genieo), I have several Firefox "plugins" but no "Extensions". I've been through the TheSafeMac.com pages on uninstalling adware and I can't seem to delete/remove the "plugins". In any case, I don't think any of the plugins left (see EtreCheck report) are malicious.

Best,

-G

Eric Root et al.,

I've looked into the Dyld Error Messages a bit...

>For Safari:

"Dyld Error Message:

Library not loaded: /System/Library/Frameworks/CoreText.framework/Versions/A/CoreText

Referenced from: /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/WebKit2.framework/Versions/A/WebKit2

Reason: image not found"

in /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/RemoteViewServices.framework/Versions/A/Remot eViewServices

And, what I've discovered (helpful or not? not sure, which is why I'm posting it):

>For Safari, cf. "Library not loaded: /System/Library/Frameworks/CoreText.framework/Versions/A/CoreText"

Within my /System/Library/ there are two Frameworks folders: one "Frameworks" one "Frameworks (from old mac)". I have no idea what that is about; normal?? In any case, I see that for Safari, whatever the computer is looking for ("CoreText" file, a .framework file) exists in the "Frameworks (from old mac)" folder. There isn't even a CoreText folder in my /System/Library/Frameworks/.

>>For iPhoto and Mail, cf. "Expected in: /System/Library/Frameworks/AppKit.framework/Versions/C/AppKit"

Again, there are two Frameworks folders in /System/Library/. Both of these Frameworks folders have /AppKit.framework/Versions/C/AppKit. However, the AppKit.framework file does not contain "_NSApplicationDidChangeFocusedUIElementNotification". Should it? Is the text "_NSApplicationDidChangeFocusedUIElementNotification" supposed to occur in that AppKit file?

Should I post the (small amount of) text from the AppKit.framework and CoreText.framework files here in a reply?

Try a restart.

Do a backup, using either Time Machine or a cloning program, to ensure files/data can be recovered. Two backups are better than one.

Try setting up another admin user account to see if the same problem continues. If Back-to-My Mac is selected in System Preferences, the Guest account will not work. The intent is to see if it is specific to one account or a system wide problem. This account can be deleted later.

Isolating an issue by using another user account

If the problem is still there, try booting into the Safe Mode using your normal account. Disconnect all peripherals except those needed for the test. Shut down the computer and then power it back up after waiting 10 seconds. Immediately after hearing the startup chime, hold down the shift key and continue to hold it until the gray Apple icon and a progress bar appear. The boot up is significantly slower than normal. This will reset some caches, forces a directory check, and disables all startup and login items, among other things. When you reboot normally, the initial reboot may be slower than normal. If the system operates normally, there may be 3rd party applications which are causing a problem. Try deleting/disabling the third party applications after a restart by using the application un-installer. For each disable/delete, you will need to restart if you don't do them all at once.

Safe Mode - About

Jan 6, 2015 8:30 AM in response to Eric Root

Problems still persisted with other users and in safe mode.

Here is what worked (and I feel like a complete and total dolt!):

>>I was looking through my TM machine backups in order to restore to the preferred backup and noticed that for the last year I've been running 10.8.5(!). I had no idea and here's why: First, I have had zero reasons to check on my operating system in the last year. Second, back in January 2014, I had upgraded to Mavericks (from 10.6.8), had a bunch of quirky system and software issues, so I downgraded back to what I would swear on was 10.6.8. Third, I have never installed Mountain Lion!

>>At this point, after SO much adware/malware sleuthing (and I did learn a lot), I decided to upgrade to Mavericks again--for one, the message had been screaming at me at least when attempting to open Notes and Launchpad, "You can't use this version of the application X with this version of Mac OSX. You have 10.6.8. The app requires 10.7 or later." (Dolt!).

>>So, I erased and installed 10.6.3 from disc (again), updated software, the updated to Mavericks (from App Store because I had already downloaded it--did you know, it is no longer available unless you previously downloaded it?). Then I restored from TM backup (in which I was operating 10.8.5 for reason(s) unbeknownst to me) and all is beautiful again.

I can't believe I did not try upgrading OS in the first place. But thankfully, I've had time in the last few weeks to figure this out as I've recovered 10,000 precious photos and who knows what else.

-G

Hanging question: when I erase and install 10.6.8, the restore to old, preferred TM backup, About This Mac says, "10.6.8". OK, that makes sense. When I upgrade to Mavericks, then restore, I end up in 10.8.5 land. What's that all about anyways? OS basics? Do tell anyways.
