Q: No notification voicemail iphone 4s

After the 8 upgrade I no longer get notification that I have a voice mail.  I can see there is a missed call, but the red dot notification is now missing. I now have to bring up the key pad and hold down the 1 key to see if there are any messages.  In various forums I keep seeing that this is a carrier problem.  I have a sim card that allows me to punch out the size card I need.  I was able to change the mini sim back to the larger size, then put it back in my old phone.  On that phone the voice mail icon displays, I can go directly to voice mail and pick up the message with no problem.  The problem seems isolated to the iphone.  Is there some setting that needs to be changed to get my phone back to normal?

iPhone 4, iOS 8.1.2, no voicemail notification

    Hi dmeone,

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities!

I understand that you are no longer receiving notifications for voicemails left for you and how frustrating that can be. It sounds to me like you have an issue with your visual voicemail. You mentioned holding the 1 key to call your voicemail, but can you access your visual voicemail from the Phone application? If not, please use the attached article for troubleshooting information.

Please let me know if you are still having difficulty with voicemail notifications if your visual voicemail is working as it should.

    Best regards,

    Joe

I used to get a red dot on the voicemail icon.  I'd then press the icon and it would go to voicemail.  Now the red dot is gone.  That wouldn't be so bad if when I pressed the voicemail icon, it would go to voicemail.  The screen displays no voice mail.
