Q: EFI Boot

Hey Everyone,

I just bought a new iMac.  (Specs here:http://store.apple.com/us/buy-mac/imac?product=ME088LL/A&step=config) It came with Mac OS 10.9.4 installed, I needed to install 10.8.  It would not recognize my 10.8 Boot disc so I opened disc utility and did a restore from the boot disc to the Mac HD.  Now the mac won't boot at all and when I boot it up with the option key it shows the Mac HD is now EFI Boot instead.  Whats going on??? I know for a fact that when this Model was released that they released it with 10.8 and that the hardware can handle it so why wouldn't I have the freedom to back grade to 10.8 if from 10.9 if I wanted?  I want a work around and a way to get the iMac to recognize 10.8.  Thanks.

iMac, OS X Mavericks (10.9.5), 3.2GHz Quad-core Intel Core i5

Exactly WHICH version of 10.8 did you try to install? I believe that mac shipped with 10.8.4 if you've installed a version earlier than that you've messed up. At this point you should attempt to do an internet recovery to reinstall the OS Computers that can be upgraded to use OS X Internet Recovery - Apple Support

    Luz,

The issue is very  simple, your computer is designed to run with 10.9.4 or later, you cannot install 10.8.x on it natively. However what you can do is install emulation software such a Parallel's and then install 10.8.x on that however there is no such thing as a disc version of it. AFAIK this is this the only way you can get 10.8.x to run on your machine.

rkaufmann87 is more than likely correct. The late 2013 imac started shipping in September with 10.8.4 build 12E4022 and 10.9 was introduced in October. If your imac was built around October 22, 2013 it originally shipped with 10.9 and that is the earliest OS it can run. As noted above if you need something else you'll have to run it in a VM.

    Luz,

Being hostile doesn't help a thing. The reason your machine is will not run an earlier version of OS X is that the machine was never designed to, it is optimized to run the most up-to-date version of OS X when it was made.

Being Hostile??? I wasn't being Hostile,  I was expressing my disappointment in Apple's Empirical Marketing strategy and actually I had thanked you for the information so you might want to check the actual definition of Hostile.  and yes I will visit www.Apple.com/feedback.  But to be clear I was not being hostile.  I was appreciative for your information and it did help me so thank you.  all the best and happy holidays.
