Q: Why does "other" take up nearly 3gb of my storage?

I have an iPhone 5c that I just bought recently. I backed up the device because it was taking up way too much space, and reset it, only sncing it with what I need. Well its been not even 24 hours, and my iPhone, which already has a very limited 8gb or memory, is giving up 2.8gb of space for other. It happened when I synced a movie onto it, and the "videos" section shows that its taking up the movie as well as other. Now I have just about no space. How can I see whats in this "other" category and then delete all this junk? I don't want to jailbreak it for a solution, but that seems like it'll be a better option than apple has to offer.

    Hello gorantheg,

Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.

If I understand your post correctly, you are trying to find out what Other data usage is, and if possible how to clean it up.  Below is more information on what Other is, and steps you can take to try and reduce the size.

    • Other: Settings, Siri voices, and other system data

Orphaned files might remain on your iOS device if it's physically disconnected while syncing music, podcasts, videos, or photos. This can prevent iTunes from syncing the iOS device on subsequent sync sessions. When this happens, you might see a large amount of "Other" disk usage for the iOS device in the Capacity indicator in iTunes. Try these steps:

    1. Turn off the music or photo sync option in iTunes for the device.
    2. Click Apply to sync the changes to the device.
    3. Turn the music and photo sync options for the device on again.
    4. Click Apply again to try to sync the device to iTunes. If you see the "Not enough free space" alert, continue to step 5.
    5. Turn off the automatic syncing functions for the iOS device:
      1. Select the iOS device from the iTunes window and click the Summary tab.
      2. Deselect "Automatically sync when this device is connected" and select the "Sync only checked songs and videos" checkbox.
      3. Click Apply to sync the changes to the device.
      4. Reduce the amount of data that is being synced to the device and resync the device. For example, if syncing your Music library exceeds the memory capacity of the device, choose "Selected playlists" to transfer rather than "All songs and playlists" under the Music tab in iTunes. If you see the "Not enough free space" alert, continue to step 6.
    6. Restore using iTunes.

If you get a "Not enough free space" alert on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support

    Take care,

    Alex H.

2 - 3 GB of  Other is a normal amount. More than that usually indicates corrupted data and at that time you need to restore it then reload your most recent backup.
