trying to update profile picture
Does apple know that you cannot add a picture to youre profile? I think there sight needs some repair. Lol

I can do the avatar, but not the profile picture.

you're gonna have to tell us much more... I just tested what you say you can't do, and did it with no problem.
be specific and detailed about all of your actions - beginning, middle and end - take screenshots where a picture may worth a 1000 words

well I went to profile, add picture,choose picture,browse my pc,select pic,upload pic. All worked till it said crop pic, then error and nothing,

besides crashing my Mac like I have never seen before the 1st retest - I did successfully test again the 2nd go round - Firefox browser
when you say "... , browse my pc, ..." - what PC? OS?
you also say "... then error and nothing, " - first mention of ERROR - is there a error message or just NOTHING? If nothing, can you be more descriptive? Freeze? Just sits there like bump on a log?

I added another Sunflower to the Apple Support Community, ASC, photo list. Success for me using firefox 33.1.
I'd suspect your web browser. What browsers and versions did you try. You doing this on a computer or say on an ipad? ASC is allergic to ios. Apple forces all ios apps to use their web framework, so no mater what browser you use, you could run into the same problem.
No, my aviator isn't custom. It's a stock ASC aviator from shortly after I joined ASC.

OP reports multiple browsers, multiple images, all fail at final step - also threw in "PC" in one reply. waiting on PC ident.
I have no doubt that there may be a gremlin in that process as I had a BAD crash at [Browse] for the pic to upload - I mean bad! Firefox had to be force quit from Activity Monitor - upon restart of Mac it hung before it shut down for the restart. required battery removal and unplug AC adapter. never seen anything like it in all the time I've had this Mac.
All recovered nicely and succeeded in testing a new pic after boot - another restart from login to Mac screen

I tried to load a profile picture again this morning, Even though I am new to this discussion game (which is kinda fun in a weird way), I am no dummy around computers. I have tried to upload pic on my desktop useing win 7 and IE and have also tried on my laptop useing win vista IE and MSN Explorer. In all instnces after I choose a photo from my files I then click upload and the next page tells me now that I have uploaded my image I need to crop it, but there is nothing in the drop down box except a small x in the upper right hand corner. No error message just this
Now that you've uploaded your photo, select an area of your photo that will be used around Apple Support Communities.
or Upload a different photo that is as far as I can get

Good deal (not so good that it didn't work, but good you tried again). Did not mean to belittle in any way, we just need the most info we can get.

You apparently are having a glitch or two between picking your image(s) and them displaying on the [Crop Photo] step. The image links are showing the "Broken Link" icon
