Q: iPad First Gen Update

My aunt got my nephew a first gen iPad from Japan this Christmas. We are not really an Apple family since we can't afford it and even me, who is good at techs don't know what to do with his iPad. The problem is the common apps that we need to download in his iPad requires iOS 7 up but according to what is displayed in the update section in its settings, it is already up to date which it has an iOS 5. How do I update it?TIA

iPad, iOS 5.1.1

The first generation iPad can't be upgraded beyond 5.1.1. However, you can use the article below to help you install older versions of an App.

Install the latest compatible version of an app on an earlier version of iOS or OS X - Apple Support

Now it is clear to me that a first gen iPad that has a 5.1.1 iOS can't be upgraded. Thank you. But I can't seem to find common apps that are compatible with the device specially Facebook. I read an article saying that this kind of iPad can't have Facebook and the latest social networking apps. I also read that when downloading an app, it checks for the latest compatible version for the iPad which I think its about legacy app or something but in my case it's not happening. I have read the contents of the link you gave me but still no luck. The solutions I found in the internet was to download by using a computer then syncing it through iTunes but don't know how to do it and I will search how to do it.

If you can't get a legacy version of a app you can always get FaceBook.com on the Safari browser. Once you go to the website tap the share icon ( curved arrow) at the top of the page then tap add to home screen and you'll get a FaceBook icon on your home screen.

That could also be done but you know people these days(including me) if there's an app, go for the app hahha

I found my way through iTunes in Windows and I think this will be the solution to my problem(the downloading/installing is not yet finished as of this moment)

First, I updated my iTunes(Windows) to its latest version

Second, Sign in the iCloud account used in the iPad to iTunes

Third, Search the desired app using iTunes

Fourth, Download it then wait until it is finished

Fifth, Open App Store using iPad then go to Purchased section

Sixth, You will be able to see what you have downloaded from your iTunes in Windows in the Purchased section. Just open it

Seventh, Find the install button then press it, you will now be prompted to download the last compatible version for your device

I am stilling waiting for it to be finished, I will get back to this thread for feedback as soon as it finished download/installing which I hope will help other members too regarding of this problem

    EDIT:

Yes, this is the solution to my problem. Thanks to the people who took their time to reply and help me in this thread. The only disadvantages in doing this solution is that it will surely take most of your time since you have to download twice(download from iTunes in Windows then download from App Store in iPad)

Glad to hear you got it installed. My suggestion was plan B in case the seventh step didn't offer a compatible version. A number of people have written their iPad 1 is worthless because they can't get the latest app and I try to remind them before there were apps there was the internet and it's still there.
