Please look over the technical specifications for your machine. You can find them by clickinghttp://www.apple.com/imac-with-retina/specs/. Yes, your iMac has built-in microphone too. You can find it by clicking iMac (Late 2012 and later): External features, ports, and connectors - Apple Support

Dec 26, 2014 7:31 PM in response to rkaufmann87by JeffDempsey,Ahh... I know the Retina iMac has a built in microphone, however, my 2008 iMac has an microphone jack as well as a headphone one.
I plugged in my iPhone cable to my Retina iMac Headset port, and it worked like it was plugged into my iPhone, so it looks like it's a 4 ring port (ground, mic, left, right speakers).
That's the long answer. The short one is "yes, the headphone jack can work for a headphone/mic combo".

Dec 26, 2014 7:59 PM in response to JeffDempseyby Frank Caggiano,For a while now Apple has removed the analog audio input from their systems.
As you found out the output jack (more correctly called a headset jack) however will work as an input but only from devices with a three-ring jack like the one on Apple's earbuds.
