Q: OS Upgrade

I currently using 10.6.8 and running FCP Pro X version 10.0.9 on it. there is a plugin that I need to run FxFactory Pro. However, in order for me to do this I have to upgrade to FCP X 10.1.4. But in order to do that I must upgrade my OS. The last time I ran into this is when Leopard came out I was using Final Cut Express HD. I upgraded to Leopard and then I had to deinstall Leopard because Final Cut Express HD would not run along with other applications that I previously purchased. Therefore, I am very apprehensive about upgrading the OS with the fear of having to purchase new applications from apple to replace those that will no longer wait.

So my my question is, will I have to purchase new applications to replace the ones I believe will not work in 10.1.4?

Please advise

You can upgrade to FCP X 10.1.4 and Yosemite for no charge from the App Store.

Not sure how your other apps will react.

I found all my stuff works OK.

Your Mac Pro is starting to show it's age a little.

I'm not sure whether FCE will work on 10.10 or not. I have a copy of 3,5 and I didn't have any success. You could check the FCE forum to get a better answer.

Here's an alternative you might try.

Take a spare drive and use it as an alternate start-up disk. Install Yosemite and then 10.1.4 on it. Install your plug-ins. Just remember that any events and projects that you need to open in 10,1 will be incompatible with 10.0.9 once they are updated. Hide and/or duplicate any you don't want updated.

I was trying to smooth out a grainy clip but cannot unless I upgrade. So you're saying that I wil lose my current projectt in 10.09 if I upgrade to 10.10, correct?

NNo you will not lose your project in 10.0.9 if you properly upgrade it to 10.1.4.

    FCE4 does work in Yosemite.

The Current project I am referring to is in final cut Pro X. So this project will be okay in 10.1.4, correct?

No, I wan't saying you would lose it. There are multiple ways to preserve the ability to open the old projects – in the old version, if you want to continue to use the old version. Probably the most helpful thing to do is to read documentation on upgrading and/or watch a tutorial since the new file organization scheme is so different. There are many excellent ones to choose from.

IIf the events and its media and the project is in the correct location and is updated correctly the project will be updated into the 10.1.4 library.

I updated to Yosemite overnight. I did back up my Final Cut project to an external disk.

As suspected I lost some of my applications the most important of which is final cut Pro X. Do I just go ahead and download 10.1 and everything will appear once I download and install it?

You mean you overwrote Snow Leopard with Yosemite? What we had ben talking about was to install the new OS on a different drive or partition.

Should I use time machine to go back to snow leopard? I am not sure about using a partition. Perhaps I should take it to Mac genius

TTime Machine does not let you go back to an older OS.

IF you updated to Yosemite the application should not have been overwritten if it was in the correct location.

SImply download the application again from the App Store, or restore it from Time Machine.

THe applicatio was in the applications folder. I did back up the application to an external drive. Can I simply replace the non working app with the app from the external drive? And if so will I be able to upgrade to 10.1,2 then to 10.1.4? In other words should I do a version by version upgrade or go straight to 10.1.4?

i I see the application wasn't overwritten; you just still have a version that's no longer compatible with Yosemite.

I Would go straight to 10.1.4 as you have to download anyway.
