Q: 'About this Mac' displaying definitely wrong disk storage of Apps

Hey guys,

My MacBook Pro is 15 inches late 2013, and recently I found it has some issues on displaying the disk storage.

Screen Shot 2014-12-27 at 11.49.03 pm.png

As seen above, 'Apps' has 936.23GB which is definitely wrong!

Could someone explain this kind of issues?

Please help...

MacBook Pro with Retina display, OS X Yosemite (10.10.1)

       Re-index Macintosh HD.

Spotlight reindexing will take a while to finish.

System Preferences > Spotlight > Privacy

       http://support.apple.com/kb/ht2409

You will see a new category  “Other” in the Storage Display.

's suggestion should help, but sometimes Spotlight still won't play nice after his steps. If so, you can use this Terminal command:

    sudo mdutil -E /

Thank you!  Your advice does help!

Actually, I only followed the first step, adjusting the Spotlight > Privacy, then the issue is gone!

    Thanks!

Well, since s steps solved it for you I would suggest not using the Terminal command anyway

    Have a great day,

I can't seem to figure out how reindexing works, if I follow these steps:

From the Apple () menu, choose System Preferences.

    Click Spotlight.

    Click the Privacy tab.

Drag a folder or an entire volume (your hard drive) to the list.

If prompted for confirmation, click OK.

Remove the item or volume you just added to the list by clicking it and then clicking the minus ("-") button.

    Close Spotlight preferences.

Spotlight will re-index the contents of the folder or volume.

But I also find posts about people not being able to reindex using this method on Yosemite 10.10.2.

Could anyone help my Application volume shows 1.35TB on a 250GB SSD, I do have a 1TB external drive I use with Time Machine. However I'd simply like actual estimated storage space again. It does show up correctly everywhere else apparently so I'm not that concerned also the Mac seems to run as usual.

Another thing I don't really feel like posting another post for right now is that my Memory tab has completely vanished from about this mac, but everywhere else it shows as usual so again, not really concerned rather annoyed that storage is not displayed nicely as it should be.

I hope someone can help if not, new update is sure around the corner and could fix this I guess. And just my application folder doesn't show the right size it seems.

I don't know what happened, the MAC must have magical powers of rehabbing itself, I wake this morning without having done anything and my MAC shows the normal/real percentage used. Now I feel like crap having not made a screenshot yesterday as I have no proof now. The only issue I have now is that my Memory Tab is still missing not my memory tho. Anyway my problem is current solved by mysterious ghostly intervention. Ghost in the machine right!

Might the indexing have worked in silence as that's really all I did to try to solve it as explained in the last post it didn't seem to do anything no progress was showing not even when I added the applications folder to privacy and deleted it again as explained in the fix, spotlight would not show anything being done.

Reindexing the Macintosh HD takes a while to finish.

To watch the indexing in progress:

Click the magnifying glass icon in the menu bar and ender "indexing" as the search term.

A pulsating bar will appear at first and then a steady progress bar.

Adding a volume to the "Privacy" pane  and removing it will delete the existing index.

This will force the OS X to reindex the volume.

Wow, wait a minute are you saying being on OS X 10.10.2 I will literally have to "(cmd+space) or magnifying glass (as you say)" + type "indexing" to see a progress bar appear. Are you serious?

I don't know but, I don't think that anyone would ever know this weird "workaround" to get a progress bar view of the re-indexing process, don't you think?

Anyway seems to have worked out for me now and if this happens another time before this method has changed again, by another version of the OS, I would definitely check if this is the case and let you know here. But I doubt that will be the case, given the current rate that Apple changes such things in their OS.

Simply put, one should get feedback the moment re-indexing starts without having to do anything frankly, I should not have to go search for a progress bar lol xD

Thanks for the quick feedback dominic23

Well it just happened again, what is causing this, Spotlight? And this time I have a total different amount of apps all over sudden.

At least I did the screenshots this time. And the screens to show you that, even if I follow your steps after removing it from the privacy tab, I get nothing, even if I type indexing. I did see what you mean with the progress bar in spotlight on a screenshot online, but he didn't even need to type indexing he could type anything and it would show a progress bar. But for me that's not the case as you can see. Could an application be causing this? I'm disappointed that this came back this quick. Anyway as for my other question you can see that I am missing the memory tab if anyone knows why that is, I think my brother has the same OS version installed and its still showing for him.

    Screen Shot 2015-04-03 at 18.05.55.pngScreen Shot 2015-04-03 at 18.10.09.png

Of course I am missing the screenshot with the removed applications folder but I didn't want to put more screens in here for an obvious step, I just added the one with apps in privacy to show that I am on the right page and doing the right thing in order to start a re-indexing.

    Screen Shot 2015-04-03 at 18.11.00.png

Another question, can I throw in the whole Macintosh HD, because I get a warning when I try to do so...

I guess my HDD is broken, I'm getting 4HDD/11/40000000:SATA(0,0) error on Hardware test, it might be the connection in my case as someone pointed out in another thread, so no need to try to solve my issue, I will have to go via the Apple Care I have to try to get my problem hopefully fixed.

I hope it will survive for a few more days as it's the only computer I have and it's just weekend, I won't be able to do anything until Monday I guess or maybe tomorrow, but I think the only store we have in town don't do repairs on weekends.

    Thanks for trying to help!

Someone notified me about the 4HDD/11/40000000:SATA error possibly being a false alarm, I am really wondering now whether this is or isn't serious, I have also posted in another thread about this particular issue and hope to get some feedback soon. As the Mac seems to run just fine, except for the issue of faulty storage display, which keeps coming back over and over, day by day.

In fact, I never even considered doing a hardware test and would not have been aware of this error code if the storage display would not have started doing this, and it's the storage display issue which is mostly annoying, not so much the error code as apple is saying that AHT is rather bad at handling SSD.

I'd really like to know what's going on here and either make use of this 300€ heavy apple care plan before it's too late, if I really have to.

Again I hope to get some feedback soon before the end of the week possibly, so I can make a decision.

    Thanks in advance.
