Dec 29, 2014 1:11 PM in response to isansthsby Jason L,Hi isansths,
Welcome to Apple Support Communities.
The article linked below provides troubleshooting tips that’ll help you find out if your iPad needs service because of the issue you described, where it was dropped and now shows a blank black screen.
Get help with the screen on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support
If you see a solid color screen (black, white or blue)
- Plug in your device to a power source. If you see the low-battery screen when you plug in, let your device charge for at least 10 minutes (20 minutes for iPad) before using it.
- Reset your device while it's plugged in.
- If resetting doesn’t fix the issue, restore your device.
- If you still see the issue after you restore, contact Apple Support.
Ciao,
-Jason

In the future, might consider a drop-resistant shell. I've encased my iPad4 in a LifeProof case from the get-go. After saving the device during more than one storm, the climax occurred a couple of weeks ago. Failed to grasp it adequately picking it up from a table, juggled desperately and it finally dropped from about 5 feet onto one corner. Bounced 3 times before it came to rest. Absolutely NO damage! I am now convinced on all of LifeProof's "proofs".
