Q: Safari crashes despite clean install.

Safari is crashing, usually when I have been doing quite a bit of surfing and  hopping back and forth between multiple safari windows.  I initially had some sluggishness as well, which I thought could be related to any number of programs recently installed.  So I used time machine and reset my entire system back to a time right after a clean install of snow leopard and upgrade to mountain lion.  From there I ran all available updates.  The only thing I added was Office 2011 and its updates.  After a number of days, once again Safari crashed.  So I reset system back to the clean install and upgrade once again, but did not add any programs, including Office.  I browsed for a few days with no problems, until it crashed again, twice.

Just prior to the second crash, a little pop up said security updates had been installed.  I thought that was a little odd, since it usually doesn't just install them like that without my permission.    So I clicked on App Store updates to see if there was any more info, and a Safari 6.2.2 update was waiting for me, which I then installed.

from the All Messages window :

1st crash:

12/23/14 10:00:00.610 AM com.apple.launchd.peruser.501[158]: ([0x0-0x63063].com.apple.Safari[862]) Exited with code: 1

2nd crash:

12/23/14 5:55:06.034 PM com.apple.launchd.peruser.501[158]: ([0x0-0x23e23e].com.apple.Safari[3174]) Exited with code: 1

Mountain Lion and Safari 6.2.1  (and as of yesterday's update,  6.2.2).  I have a late 2009 model iMac.

3.06 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo

Memory  12 GB 1067 MHz DDR3

Graphics  NVIDIA GeForce 9400 256 MB

Software  OS X 10.8.5 (12F45)

I have added nothing other than the operating system, safari, iTunes, and their updates.  I haven't even installed Adobe Flash back on it yet.

Issues with sluggishness originally started in late October, and then started frequent crashing in late November.  So after a couple of day's of crashing, I used time machine to take me back to a clean install of Mountain Lion that I had saved.  Ran it for a while ok and then installed Office 2011 and updates and a bit later the crash occurred.  So I was thinking perhaps Office 2011 updates had been the cause.  So once again I reset back to the clean install with Time Machine, but this time I installed nothing else.  No Office.  Not even Adobe flash (just had to do without watching Facebook videos.  )  Same thing however.  After a few days, the crashes showed up again.

It may have something to do with my browsing, since I was researching and had about 6 safari windows running and bounced back and forth between them.

I can tell you I have no extensions other than Quick Time and iPhotoPhotocast that must have come with Apple updates and install.

I've had another crash since these.

iMac, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.5)

First, if you do not ahve an alternate browser, get one while Safari is having a moment of sanity. I prefer FireFox but there are others. I recommend avoiding Google Chrome at this point. It installs a lot of extra stuff that could cloud troubleshooting issues.

Let's make sure something did not sneak in when you weren't looking. Some bits of harnful stuff might have worked their way into your Time Machine backup. Please download and install this free utility:

    http://www.etresoft.com/etrecheck

It is secure and written by one of our most valued members to allow users to show details of their computer's configuration in Apple Support Communities without revealing any sensitive personal data.

Run the program and click the "Copy report to clipboard" button when it displays the results. Then return here and paste the report into a response to your initial post. It can often show if any harmful files/programs are dragging down your performance.

I'm not seeing the "usual suspects." The only flag is that Web Processes (safari) is using nearly 2GB of memory. That often happens with anti-viris programs, cleaning apps, and incompatible Safari extensions but I don't see those in your report.

Let's try this for now: restart the computer and then see how it does over the next few hours. It's been running seven days and sometimes a restart can clean out temp items that can slow the computer.

Not sure if you are able to glean anything from that.   Since then I've had one more crash.

Ok, well did the full shut down earlier.  Restarted later to use safari.  All went well.  Put into sleep mode while I left the computer for a couple of hours.  Came back and did just a little surfing, checking scores on ESPN and read some Facebook posts and it crashed while reading.

Try removing the memory you installed, leaving only the Mac's original memory installed. Use your Mac until it crashes again, or long enough to conclude that it won't.

... a little pop up said security updates had been installed.  I thought that was a little odd, since it usually doesn't just install them like that without my permission.

That's normal, assuming it's the recently distributed OS X NTP Security Update. It's also the first and only such update to be installed thus far using that method, one that Apple reserves for updates they consider particularly important.

I installed the memory on Nov 24th, but it was in response to safari crashes.  Actually, initially Safari was sluggish, and then the crashes started.  I did save a couple of the crash reports that occurred just days before I installed the new RAM.  Since I don't know how to read them to know what is the relevant portion, I could only guess that it is the portion that begins with "Thread 0 Crashed:: Dispatch queue: com.apple.main-thread" is related (just because of the word "Crashed.")  If it is, then I can say that the reports that I saved from crashes just prior to the RAM install are identical in this part.

If it has to do with my RAM, perhaps a better experiment would be to take out the original Apple RAM and see how it fares with the new RAM (Crucial.com).

To follow up, I decided to first try an upgrade to Yosemite,  rather than to remove any RAM to test things,  Will see how it goes.  From the limited browsing I've done so far it doesn't seem any slower.  If it can go a week without a crash, I'll consider that the upgrade solved the issue.  It's possible i'll have to install some programs that I need before the week is up, but I''m hoping to hold out to give it a good test.

Sorry to report that after not a lot of use, Safari did end up crashing on me with Yosemite.  Although this time it was not a crash in the same sense.  The safari windows remained up and after, but it was "Safari Web Content Quit Unexpectedly" report that generated, and it affected Thread 3 instead of Thread 0.  This occurred after clicking on a link in an email to my Yahoo address from Target.  So perhaps Yahoo mail is still the problem.    I have been tempted to switch to gmail anyway.

    Good luck.

I am happy to report that since that first Safari "crash" after upgrading to Yosemite, I haven't had any further issues.  This also comes after a week of pretty intensive Safari use, with many browser windows going at once or in the dock.  Things went well enough that after testing with a barebones Yosemite install, I finally went ahead and installed Adobe Flash a couple of days ago.  All is well since then as well.   I'll will probably add Office 2011 or maybe Office 365 Student version in the coming days and see if any issues arise there. (I never had problems with Office, I'm just trying to see if any programs might contribute my issues with Safari.)

At any rate, if you have iMac specs like mine or better, Yosemite works well so far.  I just haven't loaded any new applications yet.  It is possible that Safari pages load a tiny bit slower, but not enough that I can even say that with confidence, since I had issues with pages loading on Mountain Lion as well.  So far though, I feel like Yosemite is the better option for me.
