I added the sharpen to the HUD and it was not default to turn on. It was just located in the HUD for use all the time.

Likewise, I placed Sharpen on the HUD and its there and ready, but not checked until you use it.

I could not get the edge sharpen permanently into the HUD. Strangely, when I click open the file, it defaults to "omni something" which does expand out to show the property lists, and though there isn't a "new sibling" in the sidebar or in the menu I could find, I could make that change. However, the file refused to save as an plist file, so I ended up doing it in text editor and that works fine, but although sharpening worked and is now in the HUD, Edge Sharpen would not. Any one have any success with Edge Sharpen??

are you sure that you added in the ProSharpen ??? not just the regular sharpen ???
  • Barry Fisher Level 3 Level 3 (655 points)
If I understand what you mean by "Pro" Sharpen as opposed to "regular" sharpen the answer is yes. If you mean this. The regular sharpen was already defaulted at the top of the HUD and provides compensatory sharpening to offset the anti-alias filtering on camera yes? The pro sharpening is more like what in photoshop is called unsharp mask and used for final sharpening. If that's what you mean then yes. their both permanently on my HUD, with the reg sharp always preset and the pro unsharp is not. What I can't get permanently on the HUD is edge sharpening. If you know how, that would be great.
    Thanx.

Many Thanks to me100finn & barry fisher for your help.

I tried this now and the extra pallettes appear OFF by default.

    All working fine. Very grateful.

    Pro=Edge ...

Ahhh, thank you that does the trick. I was trying to type in RKEdgeSharpenOperation instead of ProEdge.
Where did you find the actual name of the tool?

Anywys, all is well now and I have my HUD customized as I want it. Really, thanx a million.

P.S. BTW is there a way I can give you some points for helping me out? Since Ididn't start the topic I'm not sure how I can do it, but if I could I would.

glad we sorted out your confusion ...

don't worry about the points - it is the thought that counts, which is more than a lot of posters give

I was defeated before I got started.

Double clicking didn't bring up a property list editor. No program available.

Tried text edit, adding "<string> etc." but didn't work.

What is this Property List Editor?

    Thanks

Property list editor I guess is something you have to install separately. But the easier way to do it is simply right click
(if using a mighty mouse) or ctrl click choose open with and select the text editor, then you have to add the text lines exactly as they are listed above. For instance on the end <s/tring> notice the back slash there. Make sure you make a copy of the original before you edit just in case you have to go back to the beginning. I think all the additions and how to type them in are in this thread. Again just make sure you check that they're typed in exactly as given.
    Good luck.

Is there any reason why one can't do something similar with the built in smart albums - eg add a last 3 months?

I just added the Edge Sharpen tool in - finding that I am using it more frequently. I think other posters here have the idea about the order of adjustments though - from an O'Reilly podcast I was listening to, the adjustments are placed in order on the HUD the way they are applied to the image most effectively. BUT, you are still free to jump from levels down to color adjustments or back up to brightness at your leisure. I personally would be hesitant to manually change the order. In my main plist file I had items up to Item 6, the last being color. I dont often use that, so I changed that to Edge Sharpen instead. It now appears as the bottom of the HUD all the time (just as it did when I would activate it).

I'd also like to remind everyone that each adjustment here has a PRESET option within the HUD - find the values that you like and SAVE it as a PRESET. Dont get all techie and mess around with plist files - you dont have to. It's right there in the panel.
