If you've redeemed the card is redeemed onto your account then its balance will be available for spending wherever you use the account i.e. in iTunes, app store on iOS devices, Mac App Store and iBookstore - you don't need to do any 'transfer', as long as you are using the same account (and are buying content for yourself, not gifting) then your account's balance will be available.

I got it to work from his account on my phone...i.e. I signed in to the app store as him on my phone. I got it to work, but it was a bit convoluted. I still got the same request for the verification code. I put in the code and then it asked if I still wanted to buy the game. I said no. I went back and tried to buy it again and (I can't remember if it asked for my son's password or not) and it worked. I saw the deduction in the balance too for verification.

I did later find an article with this at the very bottom. Maybe that was it all the time???

Additional information may be requested for verification purposes.

Thanks for your time with this...

That's the way I thought it was, but when I try to buy an app (well below the balance) it tells me that the family organizer (me) needs to enter their credit card security code to complete the purchase. This indicates to me that it would be trying to use my cerdit card on file for the purchase I was attempting to make.

As a test I went to the iTunes store and picked out a random song to download and poof it just downloaded. There must be something more to this...

<<but it's possible that you are being asked for the security code as that's the first purchase from the App Store since you set up family sharing (I'm assuming that it's the first) - it doesn't necessarily mean that the card will be charged. Your account's balance shows next to your id in the store ?>>

Wouldn't it have done that when I made that iTunes purchase that went through? When I selected that song it just took off. It didn't ask me to verify anything, and when I checked the balance after the purchase it was reduced buy the amount of the song.
