Authorized computer cannot play songs purchased in iTunes Store

I am in an infinite loop.

My computer keeps saying "it is not authorized to play this song", but after entering the correct Apple ID (I have to manually update the email address since the dialogue defaults to an old email address for at least 10 - 15 years ago) it then says this computer is already authorized. What??? I read something about how iTunes / Apple ID could be connected to an old email address, but I have no clue how to troubleshot that path.

I have deauthorized all computers to this iTunes / Apple ID. I then reauthorized just this one computer. Still no luck.

Fortunately, all songs are backed up on an external drive. I can see them in iTunes, but I cannot play them. Nor can I sync them with my iPhone.

Help.

Greetings mantarunner,

Thank you for participating in the Apple Support Communities.

I know it can be frustrating to be asked repeatedly to authorize your computer when it is already authorized. Deauthorizing all computers, and then reauthorizing the one computer was a good step.

You can find some additional tips to help resolve this situation in this article:
