Every so often all of a sudden an installer mounts on my desktop. I only eject it immediately without opening it. When I get info (Command + I) it says, "/private/tmp/tmpinstallmc.dmg" and it is about 100M large. Does anyone have a clue??
It is Genieo adware.
1. Use free AdwareMedic by clicking “Download ” from here
http://www.adwaremedic.com/index.php
Install , open, and run it by clicking “Scan for Adware” button to remove adware.
Once done, quit AdwareMedic by clicking AdwareMedic in the menu bar and selecting
“Quit AdwareMedic”.
2. Safari > Preferences > Extensions
Turn those off and relaunch Safari.
Turn those on one by one and test.
Thanks for the reply. There were 5 items AdwareMedic found and I trashed all of them. I also gave AdwareMedic a contribution. I'll wait and see if the problem continues but nothing so far after a full day. From where might these items come?? What would happen if I opened and ran the installer?
You are accessing a place that downloads them. It would cause problems, especially when browsing. Pop-up advertising.
