Add trash icon to sidebar

My wife is new to mac (macbook pro), I am not. However, I can't seem to solve the following: her Mail app (Yosemite 10.10.1) does not have a trash icon. For the life of me I can't figure out how to fix this. I am sure it is a simple fix but I 'm stumped. Help appreciated.

I'm sorry, but there has never been a Trash icon in the Finder's sidebar. There is a Trash folder in Mail's sidebar and it has an icon on the left of the folder name. Is that what you are referring to? It's usually provided automatically as part of the default folders for Mail. If it's missing you can try selecting a message and using the Trash icon in the toolbar to remove it. Then quit Mail and re-open it. See if the Trash folder reappears. If it does not then try restarting the computer. If that also fails, then reinstall Yosemite.

Reinstalling OS X Without Erasing the Drive

Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.

Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.

When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.

Reinstall OS X: Select Reinstall OS X and click on the Continue button.

Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

Thanks for the quick reply, Kappy. In rereading my post I see I was not clear. It's the trash icon in the sidebar that is missing. When she deletes an email it goes to never-neverland. On my MBPro all deleted files are in the sidebar trash icon until I permanently delete them. We don't know where her deleted emails are.

Sorry for the lack of clarity.

Kappy, thanks for the time you spent on this. FYI, this issue was with the Mail app, not Finder. The answer turned out to be a learning exercise for me (and hopefully will help others).

The answer was: My wife hadn't deleted any emails she had merely created new mailboxes and 'moved' emails, so there was no Trash icon activated. Today she deleted a number of emails and voila there was the trash icon. When she emptied the deleted emails from the Trash and the icon remained, albeit empty.

Thanks again for your interest. I'm glad we didn't have to reinstall Yosemite. I wanted her first experience with a mac product to be a smooth one. Getting her to move from a PC was a challenge in itself. So far it has been MUCH easier than I (and she) thought it would be, Trash icon not withstanding.

Regards,

Nick
