Q: No Messages or FaceTime for child IDs in Family Sharing?

The heading of this page says a child's Apple id will give them access to iMessages and FaceTime, yet after setting up my daughter's account, these features are greyed out on her iPad.  Why won't they work for her??

    To solve this

    1. Click general > restrictions
    2. scroll down to accounts (under allow changes)
    3. make sure allow changes is ticked

You will them be able to go to the facetime settings and log in with your child's details. After this you can go back into accounts and tick 'don't allow changes' to stop your child from logging into or out of other apps and services.
