with the latest release or update of software I can no longer sms my friends with non-apple derives. Does anyone else have this problem? If so, any work around? It would br greatly appreciated.

SMS messages can only be sent from an iPhone.
With the newer IOS I was able to message back and forth from my mac to people who had android phones until the latest release and it stopped working. That was all the big hype around Yosemite right - or part of it.
That feature requires using an iPhone to actually send the messages. You also can make phone calls from your Mac. This still works for me on the current iOS and OS X.
Make sure that, on your iPhone, you have Settings > Messages > Text Message Forwarding turned ON for your devices and also Send as SMS turned ON
