This could be an indication of a short in the headphone jack. I would try cleaning the jack, the sync cable plug, and the headphone cable plug with a contact cleaner (I use De-Ox-It). You will need a really tiny lint-free swab to get down into the headphone jack.

If you have been exercising with the iPod, you might have gotten sweat (highly conductive) down in there. Instead of clipping it to a collar or waistband, I had to switch to an armband.
